Artist Trading Cards!

Hi Everyone!
Have you heard about the latest fad in art? Its called "Artist Trading Cards" or "ATC" for short. They are the same size as standard trading or playing cards: 2 1/2" x 3 1/2". Yes, they are small! They are all the rage on ebay and I've seen them with bids from 99 cents to $99!

They can be made of any medium but most are acrylics or watercolors on paper or canvas. Some are collages and many are drawn. Some are painted right onto playing cards. Anything goes!

Apparently, some artists starting the trend when they started to trade mini artworks with each other. The fad caught on and is quite popular on ebay where these artists are doing quite well.

I've made a bunch and I am wondering if any tour artists would like to trade with me? Wouldn't it be cool to trade mini artworks at the tour? Email me (gereemcd@earthlink.net) if you're interested in learning more about ATC's or want to trade.

I know there has been some discussion about how to cut the $25 fee for local artists. Well, here's an idea: what if each artist donated 25 ATC's instead of $25. Some would be worth more than a dollar so the tour could make more than the $25. Some can be sold at the info booth while others can be auctioned. The leftovers on Sunday afternoon could be put in the last auction with an opening bid of $1. Just a thought.

Let me know what you think-

  1. Geree,

Donating ATC or some "in kind" art in lieu of fees sounds like a great idea.

Manyfold - gets more art AND artists out there to be seen and sold. That is the purpose of having an arts tour, isn't it? Whether the idea can be sold to the committee is another matter. I'm game for promoting it.

Needless to say the 1st thing I did was google ATC. Plenty of pages and images on them too. Artist Trading Cards, a Collaborative Cultural Experience, a Swiss site has a gallery, forums, articles on history and how to make them.

  3. What about an ATC workshop...

  4. Local artists could make series of Poets Trading Cards of Tour poets as well as of their own personal favorites.

  5. Would it have to be ATC? Couldn't local artists and crafters donate other work?

What about time and labor or some other in kind trade off? Barter?

  6. Well, everyone should be volunteering their time and labor. Volunteering means you are 'giving' your time and labor.

Other artworks can be donated to the silent and noisy auctions. But this seems to be size specific which makes the trading card element the fun part.

All artists are encouraged to attempt it, be creative and think outside the box and come up with something that fits the size requirement. It sounds like a fun art challenge to me and I for one will give it a try. Hope you will too.

  7. HI-
To the writer wanting to donate time and labor, sorry I can't help you. Do you have something you'd like to do? Why not propose it at the next meeting?

I agree with the next writer, give it a try. It is a small space and not that hard to fill. Did I mention some artists are even using plant matter? Those dried flowers have a new purpose!

Glad to see there is interest and discussion. Please keep posting your thoughts,
    Geree

  8. Well, I stayed up half the night and have nine ATC's finished! For all of us who are just trying this out, I found that matboard is a nice sturdy "card" and easily handles paint and glue. Must go do more!!

  9. Artislife wrote me that I should do a word ATC something - she envisions a blacksmith hammering away at anvil, word sparks flying off. I have been experimenting with capturing, reducing and editing screenshots of web pages, as would befit a "webist." (Yes, that is a genuine "digital art" category.) Or - how digitally Borgesian can one get - a reduced & edited screen of a blog entry, with images natch.

I found some neat sites on "poetry posters" - poster sized images + poems. These could be reduced to / done in ATC size. There you go. A custom project for poets & calligraphers: hand lettered poem on complementary or otherwise spiffy background - maybe digitally altered photo - sepia, faded, or otherwised toned. That would combine ATC, poetry AND digital art.

For Dale, I envision a Sunflower background ATC with her Manzano Sunflowers poem. Pocket poems. That one would make a neat poetry poster too. Perfect for Sunflower Festival or whatever it ends being called.

  10. Pocket poems...what a wonderful idea!!!! And, a whole series of all different ones, to be put together as a large poster for an event. It would be a beautiful piece of artwork!
