Jubilee!

Mountainair's longest running event, Firecracker Jubilee, is always held on the Saturday before the 4th of July, this year falling on June 30 - this coming Saturday. Jubilee 2007 will be the much the same Jubilee familiar to all: Rotary pancake breakfast, parade, games, horseshoes, basketball tourney, Fire Department BBQ, music, vendors, fireworks... capped off with a late dance.

Yet, in the midst of comfortable familiarity, this year's Jubilee ushers in significant changes, not to change the nature of the event but, paradoxically, to keep Jubilee as we know it. This year Jubilee will be at the Mountainair Campgrounds on US60W rather than the Community Park. Accordingly the parade will reverse directions, starting on Ross behind Hanlon-Harris and finishing at the Campgrounds. Although the grounds, acquuired in 2006, have been used for meetings and memorial services, Jubilee will be the first major event held there. Unofficially perhaps, its grand opening. Town & Mayor have personally invited something like 300 officials, state dignitaries & other notables to join the festivities. Whether all will show or any (excepting perhaps candidates running for office) costume up for the parade remains to be seen...

Hi Ms. Vanessa,

Mountainair must be a very beautiful place as it is shown in the photo. I have never seen such a nice rainbow in my country i.e. India. Thanks for showing such nice pics.

Bye

Rajeev

Artist Georgia O'Keefe said the light in NM is different than elsewhere, ideal for artists. Mountainair is dry - less moisture in the air. An artist friend once explained to me that the combination of altitude and less moisture in the air affected light refraction. Maybe someone who knows more about rainbows and optics could pitch in here.

Judy Mowris, who took the picture, says the color quality was not good and the real colors much brighter.

If you look at much New Mexico art, you'll notice that NM artists paint a lot of landscapes.

Hey -this year's Jubilee parade, stuff at the campground was great. 'Fraid I messed the rest. Hope you do a report with pictures. Big turnout - better than I've seen in years.

Isn't this the first major event to be held at the campgrounds? It's going to be a great place for events. Why is the town still calling it that anyway?
