Okay, here comes Dale's 1/17/08 poem...

10 day old waxing moon in Taurus
Fiesta San Antonio de Abad

In fact this never happens.
The Cathedral doors fly open
for the Blessing of the Animals.
Pompous prelates collect money.
The nearby sea winks its blue eye.
Tenerife Island streets are crowded, democratic.
All day long, goats, mules and dogs are herded over the cobbles.
Dancers pick up their feet, avoid the excrement.
I am bareback on a white horse with ribbon-plaited mane.
Next to me, Four Horsemen in tight formation.
They want a prayer said over their steeds
before riding on to the Apocalypse.
Three worlds away, Navajo Sway Singers perform
Yeh’aosh sin, the Enemy Way ceremony
ask  white face ghosts to leave their family member alone.
It goes on for days,
the Unwelcome Ones not an easy eviction.
Wood smoke circles skyward in the cold, clear air.
Do not eat red foods with strangers.
Be careful who buys you a drink at the tavern.

Can you provide me with a list and/or a contact (name, phone, e-mail address) from whom I can get this info. My deadline is March 1, so please respond ASAP

Creative Ideas from the Inbox - Letterboxing

Jude Mowris sent this ... too good not to share. Not geocaching but surely a member of the clan, with a twist and minus the GPS. How neat would this be to add to an art event? Could ATCs be incorporated somehow? Coupons for participating galleries and other vendors?

Speaking of sharing... check out Jude's totally new look online for Straw Mountain Studio - and all the gorgeous pictures of her work.

Anyone else with a new or newly updated web site? I'd like to make web site reviews a regular feature here. A word to digital slackers though... you know who you are... it could (when the snark bytes) mean pointing out pages in need of updates and/or make-overs.

TO THE LETTER(BOX)

February 21, 2008
By Mary Forsell, Contributing Editor

I first heard about letterboxing from a woman who was already steeped in it. With her four kids, she habitually goes out in search of letterboxes—that is, weatherproof containers filled with surprises—hidden in our area. She confesses to venturing out in a blizzard once to find one. When her husband goes on business trips, he often sneaks off from his colleagues to go "boxing."

I admit I listened with a frozen smile on my face when she told me about her hobby, making a mental no te to avoid further social interaction. But, eventually, curiosity got to me and I went to www.letterboxing.org and www.atlasquest.com to see what she was talking about. These sites offer clues to finding boxes in your area.

Here's what I learned: Usually hidden in a public outdoor spot like a park or nature sanctuary, the boxes contain a unique, hand-carved stamp and a logbook. You need to bring your own stamp, stamp pad, notebook, and pen. So when you find the box, stamp your own stamp in the logbook and then take their stamp and impress it in your notebook (letterboxers usually make their stamps themselves; details on how to do it are on the aforementioned sites). Note the date or any comments in the logbook. Then put it back, well hidden, contents intact. Not all letterboxes are in the wild. Where we live in New York's Hudson Valley, many of our libraries have letterboxes hidden on shelves.

OK, I get it now! It's like going on an art tour because you get to admire the gorgeous creations of others, but it also feels like a treasure hunt. Not to mention, your kids will actually be excited to take a walk in the woods.

Ojo Peak Fire Investigation Coming To An End

thanks to Edwina (George) Hewitt for sending this...

Mountainair, NM - February 19, 2008 :  Investigators have determined that the Ojo Peak Fire was a human caused fire.  They would like to speak to anyone who may have information about any people or vehicles seen in the Pine Shadow Trail area or the South end of the Crest Trail in the Manzano Mountains the weekend of November 17 or 18, 2007.

The Ojo Peak fire, although several miles away, could have eventually threatened a popular attraction in the Manzano Mountains , the largest stand of Rocky Mountain large tooth maples in New Mexico at the head of Tajique Canyon .  This is one of many cherished attractions in the area which continue to be threatened by human caused wildfire.  With these attractions in mind and as the Ojo Peak Fire Investigation nears an end, investigators would like to make one final attempt to obtain any information from the public.  Anyone with information is asked to contact the Albuquerque Zone Dispatch office at 505-346-3910.  Hours of operation for the dispatch office are Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm .

For information about this email or to be added to our fire information email list, please contact Arlene Perea at atperea@fs.fed.us.

The Mountainair Ranger District is also in the process of updating its postal mailing lists.  If you wish to be added to the district postal mailing list, you may call the district office at 505-847-2990 or email lmcintosh@fs.fed.us.

Don't MIss the Great Debate!

That's tonight at the JJ Brazil Auditorium at the soon to be renamed campgrounds, after the Town Council meeting.

Well, I hope it's great. As one visitor commented, candidate "position statements" in the Independent article about the election left a lot to be desired. So let's show up at the debate - and with better questions and determined to get answers. Talking to Dennis, I gather that he and the panel (not sure "judges" is the most apropo designation) have assembled good questions for the candidates, garnered from all our submissions and asking different people. And then insist on good answers to these good questions... don't settle for good sounding generalities...demand specifics...

Candidates:
Kevin Turner
Whitley von Kubleben
Steve Sanchez
Larry Zamora

I stand by and repeat my offer to publish the candidates bios (woefully skimpy in article and on local flyers) and more detailed position statements - as submitted and without any comments other than what you the readers add.

Bring'em on

Call for Entries and more: Women and Creativity 2008

The Rainbow Artists project described in the Call for Entries below is only one of the National Hispanic Cultural Center's many offerings for Women and Creativity 2008.

Partnering with Insituto Cervantes, the March 1-16 event features readings from an anthology, Metamorfosis, published for the event, receptions and a round table discussion.

The Instituto Cervantes in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center held a call for submissions seeking creative writing in Spanish by women for an anthology entitled Metamorfosis. These works reflect experiences of personal, political and other transformations in one’s life and community.  The Metamorfosis project is one of the activities of Women and Creativity 2008 organized by the National Hispanic Cultural Center.  Join us for a tea and roundtable discussion of these works and meet the authors of this compelling anthology.  Please call  724-4777 to RSVP by February 25th.

Noticiera & Calendration

Story on Mountainair writer and mmac veep Ben Steinlage in Valencia News-Bulletin, January 30, 2008

More alt.energy biz for Torrance County - Willard Wind Turbines - MountainView Journal, January 24, 2006

There's another new restaurant in the area, in Tajique, Gina Zamora's Mi Cabana, next to Ray's Grocery. Call 384-1141 or 385-5050. What with Bella Notte in Estancia and Coffee Cup Court in Mountainair, maybe it's time for another fine dining in Mountainair segment.

Addie Draper will be exhibiting her oils at prestigious Weems Gallery and has promised images for blog - also allowing it OK to remind her, so I will, She also asked that I post about Art, Etc jewelry making project and fund raiser. I'll remind her about those details too. Sounds like the
jewelry making class that Spring Horton teaches for ASPIRE Family Learning Center and that
Ruth Ballen took (didn't know she had family in the after-school program) last session took root indirectly at Art Etc.

Jude Mowris, Straw Mountain Studio, has been busy - mind-bendingly productive keeping up with the quilting challenge she told us about, quilt tops for Linus Project, other fiber fun, more published in Altered Couture - 10 pages in the February issue & one of her y-shirt dresses scheduled for the May issue (don't you wish now you'd bought one at the 2007 arts tour?) - and now getting paid for it.

Name the Campgrounds Competition. Got a catchy name for the Mountainair Campgrounds? Send it to Dennis Fulfer, Webaab@aol.com, who is spearheading the campaign/ competition for the Chamber of Commerce and will present finalists to the Town Council - all this a couple months down the road so you have time to think about names, test drive them for how they roll off the tongue... If you want to try them out here, be sure to submit under under your own name to protect your intellectual property...been a lot of plagiarism and appropriation of intellectual property going around lately - in the most unlikely places and by people who surely know better. More details to come.

  • Art, Etc. - Monday, Feb 4 (and every Monday), Mountainair Methodist Church. Contact Addie Draper
  • Chamber of Commerce - 11:30 am,Tuesday Feb 5 - Installation of 2008 Board, reception with refreshments, hosted by Chamber
  • Monthly Potluck - 5:30 pm, Wednesday Feb 6 - check in at Cibola Arts for location and directions
  • Town Council Debate following meeting, Tuesday February 12, Auditorium at Campgrounds
  • Ghost Hunt at the Shaffer Hotel, Saturday February 9
  • MMAC Board Meeting, Monday February 11, time & location unknown, contact the board member of your choice for information or to put an item on the agenda.
  • Valentine's Day, February 14 and dining out overload what with eating out events scheduled at Ancient Cities (their traditional prime rib Valentine's couple's dinner), Granny's (crab legs I hear tell), Coffee Cup Court (annual Ladies Night Out), Community Center (Jubilee fund raiser). Take your pick. Will there really be that many people in Mountainair dining out?
  • Poets & Writers Picnic & Sunflower - Dale, (poet friend) Lou and Vanessa are meeting Saturday Feb 16 at the Shaffer for a informal blogging tutorial session. Drop by to say hello to Dale and show your support for sunflowering the 2008 Poets & Writers Picnic

Got Questions? Town Council Election Debate

from Dennis Fulfer

There will be a debate for Town Council candidates on February 12th at the next Town Council Meeting. Most issues will be tabled until  after the March election to fill two council member member slots. The debate will begin after any business is dealt with.

Tentatively, Glen Fulfer will moderate the event [ED NOTE not confirmed when I received this but may be by now and is the arrangement Mayor Vel Gilley was hoping for]. So far [as of Jan 25], I'm the only person on the panel of judges.  There will be a total of four judges. Judges and moderators could flip. The panel will ask a series of questions covering as many topics as possible and then open questions from the audience. Questions and debate time should focus on long term issues and commitments.

Please email me at webaab@aol.com.with your questions for the candidates.

More Ed NOTES:

Send your suggestions for questions here too for sharing - with or without your name - email them to
vcrary@yahoo.com

Slate and candidate flyers are posted about town, I saw the list at the grocery store but did not have pen and paper to write them down. I won't name any candidate unless I can name all of them accurately. Memory can play tricks. I seem to remember a Kügelschrieber on the list but know that can't be so. I invited another candidate to send me a position statement for the blog but never heard back from him. Tsk, tsk.

I invite ALL candidate to email their position statements to vcrary@yahoo.com for publishing with full credit and as sent.
