poem for Mountainair's pocket

I generally peddle poetry on its own blog, but today is the last day of another National Poetry Month and "Poem In Your Pocket Day." That means sharing favorites outside their usual zone.

This poem,
Cultivo una rosa blanca, is not just a favorite but also strikingly apropos: we should all cultivate white roses for one another:

Cultivo Una Rosa Blanca
Por Jose Marti

Cultivo una rosa blanca
En julio como en enero,
Para el amigo sincero
Que me da su mano franca.

Y para el cruel que me arranca
El corazon con que vivo,
Cardo ni ortiga cultivo,
Cultivo una rosa blanca.

I Cultivate a White Rose
By Jose Marti

I cultivate a white rose
In July as in January
For the sincere friend
Who gives me his hand frankly.

And for the cruel person who tears out
the heart with which I live,
I cultivate neither nettles nor thorns:
I cultivate a white rose.

Ha! whaur ye gaun, ye crowlin ferlie?
Your impudence protects you sairly;
I canna say but ye strunt rarely,
Owre gauze and lace;
Tho', faith! I fear ye dine but sparely
On sic a place.

Ye ugly, creepin, blastit wonner,
Detested, shunn'd by saunt an' sinner,
How daur ye set your fit upon her-
Sae fine a lady?
Gae somewhere else and seek your dinner
On some poor body.

Swith! in some beggar's haffet squattle;
There ye may creep, and sprawl, and sprattle,
Wi' ither kindred, jumping cattle,
In shoals and nations;
Whaur horn nor bane ne'er daur unsettle
Your thick plantations.

Now haud you there, ye're out o' sight,
Below the fatt'rels, snug and tight;
Na, faith ye yet! ye'll no be right,

My sooth! right bauld ye set your nose out,

But Miss' fine Lunardi! fye!
How daur ye do't?

O Jeany, dinna toss your head,
An' set your beauties a' abread!
Ye little ken what cursed speed

It wad frae mony a blunder free us,
An' foolish notion:
What airs in dress an' gait wad lea'e us,

Arts Advocacy Update

from Arts Alliance's State of the Arts: News about the arts and culture in Albuquerque & beyond

Arts Alliance Advocacy Update

The past few months have seen a flurry of activity at the Arts Alliance. Here's a brief update.

At the state level, during the 2009 legislative session, we rallied the troops to support New Mexico Arts, whose budget faced a 25% cut. As a result, and though the Department of Cultural Affairs will see a 10% cut, New Mexico Arts is expecting their budget for grant funding will remain close to last year's level. In doing research on the benefit of state grant funding for the arts in New Mexico, we found a 2005 Western States Arts Federation report that found judt under $1 million in state arts funding returned more than $63 million to the New Mexico economy.

At the federal level, the Arts Alliance has met with representatives of our US Senators' offices, and is working with Congressman Martin Heinrich to invite the House Education and Labor Committee to hold one of their hearing on how the arts and music benefit the economy and education in New Mexico. NM also has a champion for the arts in Senator Tom Udall.

weekend distractions

First, let me ask: have you clicked the Animal Rescue site today for the Shelter Challenge? If not, do so now.

Everything but Sunday's gymkhana is no doubt way too late unless you are sitting in front of the computer as this comes through the ether. Bear in mind that both have already been posted @ Announcements. ... and yesterday was the 1st concert in MMAC's Spring Concert Series. Distractions on a weekend we really need them.

Tomorrow is
Gymkhana Rodeo
I also ask your forbearance for the untidier format - a workaround side effect, the need for also explains why yesterday's was so minimalist. Not even a keyboard on the fritz can keep this blogger from her appointed rounds... announcements to post, readers to inform [or irritate, as the case may be].

Coming soon: another concert next Friday, same time, same place... different musicians, New Mexico Marimba... and in May, it's our Spring Fling

Shelter Challenge Redux

Remember the 2008 Animal Rescue Site Shelter Challenge? And the Mountainair Shelter Project initiated and run by Dee & Jerry Melargno in cooperation with the Mountainair Animal Shelter (Tanisha Starr, Town Animal Control Officer)? Last year, Shelter Project participation got off to a late start but still came in ahead of most other NM shelters - just not enough to earn $1,000 for the Shelter Project.

http://cdn.theanimalrescuesite.com/charityusa_vitalstream_com/ctg/p3/images/content/Button_ARS-click_120x120.jpg

Thanks to 2008 activities, an October Dog Walk & November Sidewalk Sale (generously supported by donated items, in particular from fellow Mountainair animal rescuers Maureen & Neil Hamilton, Jackass Junction) as well as individual donations, the Shelter Project is almost halfway to its goal.

Now it's the Spring 2009 Animal Rescue Shelter Challenge and the Shelter Project is ready to catch the first wave. Go to http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com and complete the four-step process below. It's free, carries no obligation and takes less than a minute.
  1. Click the big purple button to give food to animals in shelters
  2. On the next page, click on Vote / Shelter Challengem graphic + link
  3. Enter "Mountainair Animal Shelter" or state + Mountainair and click vote button that comes up
  4. Complete a verification process by identifying a photo of an animal
Bookmark the site or sign up for email reminder and vote every day. If you work from more than one computer or have access to computer bay (ie school computer lab), vote daily from multiple computers. Next, get more votes by spreading the word: email friends & family, use ecards & invite function on the Animal Rescue site, tap your social networks, i.e. Facebook & MySpace friends, put links on your webpages and blogs, add the Shelter Challenge to your email signature line and so on.

Editor's PS I cut out the part following "every day" - why encourage anyone to stop donating free food to rescued animals in shelters. The sponsors do not donate unless there are clicks.

LIBROS presents: Hand in Hand (Collaborations)

Dale Harris writes: Hey Poets & Artists, Come to Albuquerque' s downtown Main Library during the month of April to see some stunning, poetry based book art and on Sat. April 11 at 1 - 3 pm you can hear the poetry that went into them - plus bring your poems to read on the open mic. Then come back to the Library on Sat. April 25 for a book arts demo and hands-on creative session where you "recycle" old books into poetry. Much more info below. Happy Poetry Month everyone!!

click image to view larger version

For more information, contact Dale Harris 505-242-4930poetdale@yahoo.com

LIBROS, the New Mexico Book Arts Guild, is holding its annual exhibit of members’ work at the Albuquerque/ Bernalillo County Main Library in downtown Albuquerque . A total of 19 artists have contributed 41 works of art. Their handmade art books and assemblages will be on display in the Library’s 2nd Floor exhibit area for the entire month of April.

Since April is National Poetry Month, the theme of the LIBROS show is “Hand in Hand: Collaborations between Book Artists and Poets.” Book artists incorporated poetry into their art books, either their own words or interpreting the poems of others. Many LIBROS artists partnered with local poets to find material for their books.

Two special events associated with the LIBROS exhibition are free and open to the public. A poetry reading Sat. April 11 from 1 pm – 3 pm in the Library Auditorium on the lower level, will include many of the poets from the book arts collaborations plus an open mic. Rachel Ballantine, Karin Bradberry, Debbie Brody, Ken Gurney, Dale Harris, Sandra Lynn, Marilyn Stablein and Elaine Schwartz are the featured poets who will read their work.

Lost Pages, Found Poems”, a hands-on demonstration of book arts, will be held Sat. April 25 from 11 am to 2 pm on the 2nd Floor of the Main Library near the exhibit area. LIBROS members will guide participants in creating artful poetry from re-cycled books and provide craft materials and tips on how to find a poem on a printed page from books such as Readers Digest anthologies and novels, then turn them into greeting cards, book marks or frame-able art pieces. All ages are welcome.

The Albuquerque/ Bernalillo Main Library is located at 501 Copper Avenue NW in downtown Albuquerque . For information about hours and services, call 505-768-5141 or 311.

circus & chamber

I had other in mind today - April Addenda here adding overlooked items or plogging (poetry related topics - April is National Poetry Month). Instead, I am cross posting, duplicating information if not identically worded or formatted already posted on Announcements. I try to avoid unnecessary duplication, but both seemed important enough for redundancy, usually to be avoided in writing for reasons style & content organization but a virtue in information technology & dissemination. I considered "circuses (but no bread)" as a title but figured ensuing grice would make it all not worthwhile.
Advance ticket prices are $6/ ea for children & $8/ea for adults. Gate prices are $7/ea for children and $11/ea for adults. Firecracker Jubilee and the Chamber get a substantially larger cut from advance sales (25%) than from gate sales (10%). Tickets are on sale at Turner Inn as well as at City Hall & the B Street Market. Buying advance tickets keep more money in Mountainair.

Want fireworks on the 4th? Go buy advance tickets NOW. Spread the word. Send emails to remind your mailing list to buy advance ticket.
The other "circus" (extending the whimsical & not ill meant metaphor), tomorrow's Chamber of Commerce Meeting, Wednesday April 7, 11:30 am meets in the Shaffer Hotel Conference Room.

pottery canteen discovered at Gran Quivira,

The agenda includes Discover Mountainair campaign (marketing & budget ciommittee, discussion, Q & A session) and plans for May's big event, Spring Fling Bingo & Clean-up Day (call it Splingo for short)

Discover Mountainair presentation / discussion covers tracking effectiveness of NM Magazine ads with custom "Discover Mountainair" flower seed packet favors ("mention this ad and get a gift"), cost and how the campaign will benefit more than just "hospitality" and tourism related businesses. In addition to driving traffic to the Chamber web site (which lists and links ALL member businesses) and bringing visitor money into town, the Discover Mountainair campaign will feed into more specific "buy local" and "staycation" campaigns - to keep that money in town & not just the gross receipts tax generated. It also goes without saying - for being so obvious - that "Discover Mountainair" is as applicable to relocation as it is to tourism.

Personally - not speaking for the Chamber, I hope the Chamber, iCreate, the Manzano Mountain Arts Council, the Town of Mountainair or some (any) other entity will use "Splingo" to distribute sunflower seeds. The timing will right for planting them in time to bloom for the Sunflower Festival. Forget lighting candles: it is better to plant seeds than piss and moan about the absence of sunflowers (which happens often enough not to come as a surprise even to the gormless)

April is

Originally the second month of the Roman calendar, before January and February, April overflows with holidays, deadlines, designated weeks & days. April opens with Fool's Day and ends with Walpurgisnacht. (Ides of) April, 15th is the most noted & feared (far more than Ides of March ever was): Easter/las Pascuas and Passover/Pesach the month's most celebratory days.

April is

National Poetry Month (Who gets April: Chaucer or Eliot?), National Stress Awareness Month, International Guitar Month, National Keep America Beautiful Month, National Garden Month and more

Whan that April with his showres soote
The droughte of March hath perced to the roote,
And bathed every veine in swich licour,
Of which vertu engendred is the flowr;
(Chaucer, Canterbury Tales, ll. 1-4)
So far this month we have:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/97/Valborgsbrasa-1.jpg/400px-Valborgsbrasa-1.jpg
Wlapurgisnacht bonfire, Sweden

April Holidays include the trivial and unusual as well as the bizarre. This one's for Joan Page - Celebrate National Frog Month

April 14 is "National Be Kind to Lawyers Day" (what kind of card should I send my daughter?), inviting us to ponder on (juxta)positioning - the day before April 15 (suggesting perhaps even greater appreciation for tax lawyers). Surely no coincidence that April 15 is also "Take a Wild Guess Day" and "That Sucks Day." April 16 is "Wear your Pajamas to Work Day."

Motorized Travel in Mountainair Ranger District

The Mountainair Ranger District just started their scoping for a motorized travel management plan. http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/cibola/travel-management/tm_mt_air/proposed_action/index.shtml
Comments due before May 1, 2009
(see below for contact information and submitting comments electronically)

(According to WildPlaces Program Director, Bryan Byrd), the plan is a mixed bag:
  • amend the road density standard to 1.9 mi/sq mi (bad);
  • prohibit motorized game retrieval (good!);
  • open 2.2 miles of closed roads (bad);
  • designate 6.6 miles of user-created roads (really bad);
  • construct 2.7 new miles of roads (really bad);
  • perform major road maintenance (good!);
  • decommission or change to Maintenance Level 1 (administratively closed) 296 miles of open routes (good!);
  • designate 16.5 miles of routes for 150-200 foot camping corridors (not great);
  • Open system of motorized routes would be 187.5 miles - there are currently over 470 miles of roads in the Mountainair Ranger District, 411 of which are managed for high clearance vehicles and only 9 administrative routes. This is an improvement!
