Social Media ~ cartoon, questions & more

Social Media Cartoon
Originally uploaded by Marcelo_Prais
Consider this cartoon as a light hearted introduction to social media topics in the works (more social media cartoons and jokes at Social Media Jokes). I'm picking up on the MountainView Telegraph's recent (well done but cursory) introduction by Ashley Bergen on local use of social media, "Little Towns. Big Voices" to resume Mountainair Wired series, inundated unto procrastination in links, ideas, subtopics. So thank you Ashley and MVT for the nudge. Feel free to go all web 2.0 and put your 2¢ in too.

Where to start Dear Readers? Let's crowdsource the task.  You answer the article's basic interview by e-mail questions:

  • Why do small communities like Mountainair embrace social networking?

  • How did you get started using social media?

  • What are the benefits of social media? What do you get out of using social/media?

And a few more from me:

  • What are social media anyway?

  • What are the differences between Web 1.0, Web 2.0 and Web 3.0?

  • How many social media can you name without pausing to catch your breath?

(What is this? A quiz? Yes but not to worry: you won't be graded)

  • Which social media do you use/ use the most?
  • How/why do you use them? (i.e. socially, professionally or both)
  • How many of your family, friends and colleagues also use social media?
  • More to come.... stay connected...

Mountainair Wired: Getting the Words Out

Somewhat in reference and/or response to notable gaps in the MountainView Telegraph article on social media in Mountainair.

Here's hoping Dennis' Mountainair List catches on to fill announcement gap, but it's up to everyone to post listings ~ not wait for someone else to do it for them. Town Tweets, another recent entry in online information distribution, holds promise although still uneven and limited in scope. Learn by doing...

I'm giving tweeting a try as well ~ @VanessaVaile includes local news and announcements and edited town tweets re-tweeted but is broader in scope: state and national news; Western news and issues; stories/links from my rss reader; environment, health; arts; occasional literary tweets/links; and an eclectic array of retweets. Playing with the new social media toy is no doubt cutting into blogging time as is a new (non-local) digital agitator project.

ongoing & upcoming

So much for the New Years Resolution to blog daily. Still, this resolution has fared better than most such. Calendar / event posts are not the most interesting posts to write but are among the most appreciated. I keep trying to cordon them off at Announcements, but they keep escaping & returning here. I feel (grudgingly) obliged to let them in as a public service until someone fills the online calendar / announcement page elsewhere.

Under ONGOING

Notes, comments on upcoming

Making that weekending list, not exclusively TWIM & not necessarily checking it twice, looking up links, tracking down images, converting files and so on.

Just caught last night's late town tweet on RSS feed: Dessert Bingo & Cake Walk @ Campgrounds. I retweeted. Otherwise, blogwise by ether or any other light, it doesn't make the information cut: insufficient data (no beneficiary stated) & unclear date (tonight? tomorrow night?). Interested? Call the Town of Mountainair, 847-2595, for more information.

Feel free to ask why no one emailed me anything to blog. If they don't, I can't. Sometimes items come my way in a timely & usable manner, sometimes not. Otherwise, it is not my job to hunt data down like wayward dogs.

The NM State Fair starts tomorrow, runs through Sep 27 ~ the only time I've been was before moving to NM, no reflection on the Fair. I also remember UNM Valencia students bagging class for the Fair, less though than hunting season. Both were/are deemed bona fide excuses for late & missing assignments - right up there with funerals, birthings & trips to the emergency. Not a reflection on the Fair either but possibly one on higher in NM.

Same day: a 9/11 dove release at Wildlife West, Edgewood. As usual, the Central New Mexico blog is the place to go for an excellent write up on this event and more. The dove release is part of a nation wide project to release simultaneously a record number of white doves on the anniversary of 9/11. I was worried about the birds but learned that they will fly back home

And Saturday, what else but the ubiquitous Huge Yard Sale? This week's entry is Kristine Lauritsen's annual Fall Yard Sale, at the Limit this year. Converting the flyer document to a bloggable image hit a snag, for now at least. Until resolved, you can download a copy of the Yard Sale flyer from Google Docs.

As for more ~ of the ongoing sort, check last Friday's TWIM as doing one this weekend seems beyond unlikely

Another Click for Good

A recent tragedy hit too close to home to ignore. Now I want to do something. No money to donate but I can volunteer my time/talents/words.

Anyway, research and information gathering being my thing, I've been busy, have already started web 2.0/sns sharing and will be adding buttons/links to my web page and blogs - even a fund raising click link/button.

And don't forget to wear that purple ribbon.

More GQ Centennial - Digital Photography Workshop

Joe Keefe, who is conducting the workshop, wrote, in answer to my questions:
The workshop is very general, will focus on the people who attend, get as detailed as they lead it, and go pretty much into any topic, area, they feel they need. We’ll explore things like definition of terms, focus, depth of field, composition, etc., but my emphasis will be that once you know the rules, feel free to break them, as that’s what creative photography is all about. I’ll cover things like shooting to gain a viewer’s attention, diverting that attention from point-to-point in a picture, and using color to enhance a picture’s appeal. We’ll cover the different types ofcameras available, value of megapixels, zoom, optical vs. digital, etc., and the need or lack of need for many common accessories. Basically, it will go wherever the discussion leads us, in addition to getting some wonderful shots of a gorgeous national monument (Gran Quivera Pueblo Mission Ruins), now celebrating its 100th anniversary.

Poetry Matters: you've just been Broadsided

I broadsided in July for Poetry Matters (my personal blogging project) but missed last month - ironic that a local poetry event would distract me from a poety based activity... I'm back boradsiding though & may even nail you twice this month. Or nail up broadsides up on more than web location... As always, readers are invited to print out broadsides and post them in whatever public space catches their fancy...

Vector Photo

Take-out joints, parking cops, and dry cleaning services do it, why not Broadsided? Stick a photo under the windshield wiper of a car. Brighten someone's day with poetry and art. Have a photo to share? We'd love to see -- email it to us at broadsided@gmail.com. Nothing fancy required. We'll put it on the Vector Wall: (Gallery of Vectorhood)

SwitcherooWanted: Submissions for the 6th Switcheroo:

Writers: We've posted a piece of art titled "Interstate" by Kate Baird on our site, and we'd like to see what it evokes for you, in a literary sense. The usual Broadsided guidelines for submissions apply. Your response need not be literal--you may take off in any tangent the work suggests. However, the art and writing must, together, work to create a greater piece. The editors will choose a piece of writing from the submissions to be Broadsided November 1, 2009.
Deadline for submissions: October 5, 2009.

"Yard work" Poem by Ryan J. Browne, Art by Douglas Culhane

The hounds are out this morning.
Five of them loll in the shade just beyond

the parking lot, snout the grass behind a shed.
A man wearing a blue t-shirt, blue cargo pants,

a badge, and brogans, throws a rag doll, whistles,

shouts Get 'em! and they're off

The Collaborators: Ryan J. Browne teaches poetry in Alabama state prisons with the nationally recognized Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project. He is a Colorado native and a graduate of the University of Alabama MFA program. His work has appeared (or is forthcoming) in Gulf Coast, West Branch, Bayou, and elsewhere. Artist Douglas Culhane works in sculpture and drawing. He has exhibited in New York and New England. See more of his work at http:www.douglasculhane.com.

weekend notes: in-state but out-of-town

In case you don't want to spend all week-end at home, here are a few items of possible interest. There's more to a trip to the valley than Wally World or even Trader Joe's. Cross posted from the Alibi newsletter

Fri Sep 4: Wild, Wild West
Calling all gunslingers, cattle rustlers and city folk: Saddle up those horses (or Subaru Outbacks) and get on over to the Fisher Gallery (1620 Central SE). On Friday, award-winning nature and scenic photographer David Cramer will present a slideshow of his work from different wild horse management areas with an emphasis on New Mexico horses. He is also giving a talk on the rapidly declining state of affairs for wild horses in the United States, and why he finds New Mexico's horses so darn appealing to photograph. The talk is part of the premiere exhibition of Perspectives: Sharing an Open Vision. The reception is from 4 to 8:30 p.m., and the talk and slideshow start at 6 p.m. Call 247-1529 for more information. (Jennifer Valdez-Lucero) New Fisher Gallery · 4-8:30 p.m.

Sat Sep 5: Big Grape Day in Bernalillo
Bernalillo's New Mexico Wine Festival has been around for 22 years and its size dwarfs other local wine festivals. For readers non in RR deprived areas like Mountainair, the Rail Runner will be running to and from downtown Bernalillo all weekend long (visit http://nmrailrunner.com for the Labor Day train schedule). the festival runs Saturday through Monday, from noon to 7 p.m. at 243 S. Camino del Pueblo. Adult admission is $10, kids are $5. Visit http://newmexicowinefestival.com for advance tickets and directions. (Laura Marrich) Noon-7 p.m.

Sat Sep 5: Happy 400th, Santa Fe!
Happy birthday, Santa Fe! Come party this Saturday and Sunday at Fort Marcy Park (617 Paseo de Peralta, Santa Fe). It's free - telling stories, cooking food, dancing, singing and making crafts. What gift can we give to the city that already has it all? Look at http:// santafe400th.com for ideas & more information. (Adam Fox) Fort Marcy Park · 10 a.m.-7 p.m

The Mountainair List

There's a new list in town: THE Mountainair List, hosted and managed by Dennis Fulfer/DKF Diversified. Not Craig's List, not tweets (although I am tweeting the list), not a blog (although I am blogging it right here & now.

So what is it and what's it for?

It's an online classified listing service for Mountainair. Remember Adolphine's community bulletin board at Art Alley? It's an electronic community bulletin board.

Post your announcements for yourself by filling in the online form that clicking the "Mountainair List" link on the gateway page takes you to. The gateway page looks plain now won't for long.

What can you post? Yard sale, for sale, rent, lease or to give away, looking for, rentals, help wanted, lost dog, fund raiser, events, meetings, services, birthday wishes, and more.

Appropriate too I think that the FIRST announcement posted on the list is for a Adolphine's Yard Sale this Saturday - the person who put up the first community bulletin board.
