Almost There! July 4, 2012 #Mountainair Outlaw BBQ

+ pie/cake & costume contests with $100 cash prizes. Schedule: BBQ Dinner 2PM to 5PM; Texas Hold’Em Poker Tournament 6PM-10PM.

Update and more details as posted July 2 (previous post, May 8), edited to update for today, July 4. Tournament organizer and Mountainair Town Council member Barbara Chung writes,
Well, the big event is TODAY and we’re getting pretty excited about it!  Here’s some last-minute details for you:
1.  You can purchase tickets at the door on Wednesday.
2.  If you’re going to play poker, please register for it on this site.  We don’t know how many people will show up for the play, and there are only 80 seats.
3.  We will have children’s meals available for the little ones (12 and under):  hotdog, cookie and a drink for $2.  If we get a sponsor, we’ll try to drop that price.

Pie and cake contests... not too late to bake if you have the ingredients on hand but a stretch if you have anything else to do:
  • Bring your pie or cake to the contest site (The Dr. Saul Community Center) between 2:00PM and 3:00PM TODAY, July 4th.
  • Fill out the registration form, and acknowledge that you will not get your pie, cake or plate back.
  • All pies and cakes become the property of the Mountainair Outlaw BBQ Pie /Cake Contests, and will be sold or auctioned off to benefit the Mountainair Public Schools Battle of the Books.
  • The results of the judging will be announced at 5PM
More time to prep and don your turnout on for the Outlaw Costume Contest. Dress accordingly and be in the Dr. Saul Community Center from 6PM to 10PM during the poker tournament, either be playing in the tournament or hanging around.

Last year I kept waiting for a promised report  to blog on the initial iteration of the annual Poker Tournament. It never materialized. That was before

This year, I tweeted it early, mid May, blogged briefly May 30, waited for requested background information about the benefit (S.O.P. for non-profit fundraising) and press release or flyer to post even a Facebook event page to share. Burning a feed to the Fb page yield only advertising notices. A question posted there went unanswered. Again nothing bloggable materialized... unless, perhaps its very absence, the yawning information gap.

Almost There! 2012 Mountainair Outlaw BBQ .... and finally! ... a report of sorts on last year's tournament (fyi see tournament and contest pictures posted on Mountainair Online last year in a more timely manner, courtesy of Dennis and Kristi Fulfer, Photographica

Barbara writes, I want to say a big THANK YOU to all the folks who came out to support the school last year. Your generosity purchased two Battle of the Books sets for the middle school program, and helped send participating readers to the competition in Silver Springs this year. Let’s all come out and support the kids again this year–we’re hoping to extend our support to the primary school program.
