Some people hear the phrase “online education” and think it refers to engineering, programming, math and science courses. If you’ve ever browsed our course list, you’ll notice that we offer a neat group of humanities courses, ranging from history to literature. We’ve also been working with some of the most well-known universities that specialize in the arts and music.
In September 2012, we announced that Berklee College of Music would be offering courses like Songwriting and Introduction to Guitar; you can now sign up for those courses, which start on either March 1 or April 22, depending on the class.
Included in our recent addition of 29 new universities are California Institute of the Arts and Curtis Institute of Music, two highly ranked institutions that offer students creative courses in subjects like dance and performing arts, history of art and music and digital art. Here’s some more information about the universities:
- California Institute of the Arts: Established in 1970, California Institute of the Arts has been ranked as America’s top college for students in the arts by Newsweek/The Daily Beast. The school champions creative excellence, critical reflection, and the development of new forms and expressions.
- Curtis Institute of Music: Curtis has been educating and training musicians for careers as performing artists on the highest professional level since its founding in 1924. As a forward-thinking institution, Curtis is on a mission to spread the word about classical music, opening up their normally selective enrollment (which hovers around 165 students) to the Coursera community.
